The School and Parental Involvement The School Our Past The Family Montessori School Society was incorporated in 1980. The first school was situated at Sitka Square, where it currently operates and was followed by a second location due to growing numbers. This second school was moved in 1995 to Jericho Hill. Our Present We are currently operating at the pre-school and kindergarten levels at the following locations: one at Jericho Hill and one at Sitka Square in False Creek. Our schools offer an integrated preschool and kindergarten program for children between the ages of 2 years and 9 months and 6 years. Ideally, a child will remain in the program for three years, with a third year corresponding to kindergarten in the public school system. In keeping with the Montessori philosophy, each class has a mixed age group with some preschool and some kindergarten age children. Sitka Square School is licensed for 20 children in each of the morning and afternoon classes. Jericho School is licensed for 20 children in each of the morning and afternoon classes.
Parental Involvement is important in two respects: Secondly, the Society is parent run and depends on the volunteer efforts of the parent members to carry out all tasks required to keep the two schools operating. Parents are asked to perform one of a variety of jobs such as serving on the Board of Directors, maintaining the playground and school equipment in good repair, bringing library books to and from classes, producing the quarterly newsletter, laundering, sewing, planning school field trips and class parties, etc. Parental involvement is VERY important to our fundraising activities which help offset the costs of art and craft materials, classroom materials, special craft projects (Mothers Day, Christmas etc.) and other activities. Parents who do not wish to perform a parent job are required to pay a fee of one month's tuition in lieu. |
